On the 2nd of November, Surojit Chatterjee, the chief product officer of Coinbase, the crypto exchange, announced that he was leaving his position. After this announcement, Coinbase lost one of its C-suite executives. In a post on Linkedin, Surojit said that working at Coinbase for three years was a ride and the most exciting roller coaster from where he needs a break.
Surojit is trying to give himself rest from his job; as he said in the post, it’s time to get off the ride and catch his breath. Last week, the company filed with the SEC, according to which, Coinbase’s product, engineering, and design teams are being reorganized within a product group structure after Surojit leaves.
In the filings from the company, it is said that in the absence of Surojit, the leaders of such groups will assume responsibility for Coinbase’s product offerings. According to the SEC filings, Surojit is expected to retain his advisory role to Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong until at least the 3rd of February, 2023. However, Surojit was hired at Coinbase by Google for a $646 million compensation package.
During Surojit’s time in the company, Coinbase’s cryptocurrency listings increased from 25 tokens to over 200. He oversaw various company products, including Coinbase One subscription and its NFT marketplace. About Coinbase’s NFT marketplace, in an interview at the Mainnet conference, Surojit told Decrypt that the CoinbaseNFT market was a part of the strategy but not the whole strategy.
Although Surojit did not share any information about why he is leaving his post, it seems that he left due to personal reasons, which he already made public in his blog post. In the blog post, Surojit said that it had been a tough year for him; personally, his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and his mother passed away unexpectedly. Moreover, he said that If he’s honest with himself, he doesn’t think he has allowed himself time to grieve.
